BTBA Membership

To take advantage of the BTBA's services, you must first know about them. It's not a good deal unless you, the BTBA member, use the BTBA and its services.

What Are You Buying

The BTBA provides official rules; recognises bowling achievements in sanctioned play; provides tournament competition; and provides services to sanctioned leagues. How does the BTBA provide each of these services?

Official Rules

As a BTBA member, you will compete under the official rules of tenpin bowling. You probably think how different can the rules of bowling be? There are only 10 pins, one lane and one ball. It can't be too difficult, right? Wrong.

Without joining a sanctioned league, there is no sure way to enforce BTBA rules of competition. Many unsanctioned leagues adopt rules stating that all BTBA rules apply, (without having the right to do so) and then find it nearly impossible to enforce equitable rules.

As a BTBA member if league rules are violated during the season, the BTBA provides the resources and personnel to enforce its playing rules. Unsanctioned leagues, however, do not have these avenues. Unsanctioned leagues must thrash out the rule interpretation among themselves, often resulting in inequitable decisions and league tension.

BTBA playing rules are the official written document for sanctioned leagues, providing you and all BTBA members with both equality and protection.

Awards

How many sports have you participated in where only the winners receive awards? Most sports award only their top athletes trophies, medals or other awards for outstanding

performances. These awards are often out of reach for average athletes who compete for the enjoyment of participating. The BTBA however makes it possible for all members to receive awards for their bowling accomplishments.

While the BTBA awards programme may not be the single most important reason for paying BTBA annual dues, it may be the most tangible benefit offered to the membership.
These awards are not limited to outstanding scoring achievements. While the BTBA recognises bowling's pinnacle achievement - the 300 game with a certificate of recognition and 300 pin badge in sanctioned play, there are awards available for scoring achievements at all talent levels.

In unsanctioned leagues, lower average bowlers will not receive recognition for the numerous scoring achievements important to bowlers of all skills.

The BTBA recognises these achievements because they are special and outstanding.

League Recognition Awards

* Achievement Award

What if you should happen to roll a 300 game in unsanctioned league competition? Very little because without recognition from the Governing Body of Tenpin Bowling, these scores will have little real value.

Each league receives two special Achievement Awards to give to members each season. This special award may be distributed any way the league chooses. Leagues have devised a number of ways to distribute the award such as a member contributing outstanding service, bowled the most games over average, or converted the most splits!

Tournament Competition

While league competition is the backbone of the BTBA, tournament competition has always been an important service to members seeking additional opportunities to compete against talented bowlers equal to themselves.

Sanctioned BTBA tournaments which include local and national championship tournaments, have continually been expanded and enlarged throughout the years. The BTBA National Championships and Inter County Championships provides an opportunity to develop friendships with bowlers across the country; travel each year to different host towns; and earn special recognition for tournament participation. In the 'Nationals' bowlers compete in one of three average - based divisions, each with its own prize fund. This way regardless of skill level, you will compete against bowlers of equal talent for divisional championships.

All BTBA members, regardless of average have an opportunity to qualify for Team England, the nations premier bowling team, representing England in international competitions. Qualification is based on a series of ranking events organised throughout the year at centres around the country.

No matter what your skill level, BTBA provides tournament opportunities and fair competition for all its members.

Services

The BTBA was founded as a service organisation, and has continued to operate that way since 1961. The BTBA provides league officers with many supplies which facilitate the smooth running and order of all leagues throughout the season, including rule books, standing sheets and scoresheets. You may be thinking this is all great for the league secretary, but does this benefit you, the league bowler? Of course. The league officers are supplied with all the information required to operate an efficient league. With a smooth operation at the organisation meeting, the league will be able to have fun and increase the BTBA's strength.

Intangibles

While you may be well aware of where your annual BTBA dues go each season before reading this leaflet, there are many BTBA services that are intangible - even incomprehensible - for BTBA and its members. The BTBA is active in maintaining the integrity of bowling by assuring it remains an exciting and highly competitive sport. Individuals now have the opportunity to help maintain the sports' integrity by becoming a qualified Lane Inspector. You can receive training for certifying and completing lane inspections through Lane Certification Seminars. The course goal is to train as many lane inspectors as possible and to achieve accreditation they must complete and successfully pass written and on - the - lanes tests.

Coaching

Every year the Association organises numerous courses and seminars for those who are interested in instructing or simply wish to improve their own game. The path to accreditation as a fully qualified coach involves progression through a three phase instructional , with each course covering a particular aspect of coaching.
